Our Firm

For three decades BFS has provided design and planning services to public and private clients throughout California. Our projects range from regional park and open space master plans to detailed design for recreation, community facilities, healthcare and academic campuses, hospitality, housing, and public spaces.

Sustainable Design

Collaborative solutions are key to sustainability. BFS considers the processes, technologies, and materials at every phase to create landscapes that enhance a sense of place, anchor our communities, regenerate our resources, and mature elegantly. The communities we serve are socially broad and economically diverse. Sustainability begins with examining the big picture and developing pragmatic strategies that make our communities more livable and self-sustaining.

Resource Conservation

As water becomes an increasingly critical issue, BFS has sought out innovative strategies to manage and use water. Utilizing bioswales, permeable paving, on-site storage systems, and other best management practices not only helps reduce stormwater discharge but also improves water quality. Our irrigation plans utilize efficient irrigation techniques, regionally-appropriate native or adapted plants, and harvested rainwater and reclaimed site water whenever possible.

The realities of our world are changing rapidly and we are increasingly aware of available resources and the long-term impact of decisions made today. Through the development of a project sustainable strategies are considered, viability is assessed, and life cycle costs are considered.
