As part of ongoing enhancement of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) campus, BFS Landscape Architects transformed a former loading dock into a peaceful meditation garden for visitors and staff. Following CHOMP’s primary facility development goal of maintaining a “healing environment,” the mixed-use garden includes elements for children, meditation and an outdoor space near the ICU for visitors. Use of natural materials, play sculpture and sensory stimulation planting complement the outdoor space with opportunities for privacy and relaxation. Given the wide variety and diverse nature of the intended uses, careful space planning was required to provide adequate separation in a tight and unusually shaped garden.
