MARTIAL COTTLE PARK
A joint venture between California State Parks and Santa Clara County Parks preserves 287.5 acres of agricultural land through purchase and donations. Surrounded by the City of San Jose, Martial Cottle Park creates a resource for sustainable production agriculture, urban agriculture education programs, open space historic preservation and recreation.
The initial development includes farm and park infrastructure, 3.5 miles of perimeter trails, a 20-acre open space park for picnic facilities and a “Discovering Farm” for educational play. Site forms and materials reflect the landscape heritage of the region in the late 1800s. A significant design component of the park planned the operational requirements for a future tenant farm operator. BFS Landscape Architects, with Sandis Engineers, designed a fencing program, circulation and access roads, and an operations yard, which was constructed with park roads, trails, storm drainage and water supply systems.
