Designed to be a destination play space for neighborhoods of southeast San José, BFS Landscape Architects worked closely with Santa Clara County Parks to develop a distinct character for three play areas that complemented the vision of the park system. Because the playground had to fit into an existing site, the design team faced many infrastructure constraints, so it was imperative to find collaborative solutions.
BFS worked closely with play equipment manufacturers to design custom play structures that provide opportunities for children to seek out more challenges as they grow and mature. The centerpiece of the playground is a two-tower wood fort structure that is 24-feet tall, and a random log-climbing structure composed of natural materials. The playground also has a recirculating water splash pad with custom-fabricated boulder plumbed with inlaid nozzles and a programmed control system to manage the water play. Most of the playground is shaded with existing trees and large-scale custom shade structures.
